Who are we?
Imagine a community filled with healthy people and a quality of life never before experienced.
People would be well fed. Their pain would be minimal. They would be productive. Their medical costs would
be low and focused on prevention. They would have access to efficient public transportation, recreational
opportunities, a clean environment and health education. We would find quality education, housing, meaningful
employment and public safety.
No such community exists today. But pieces of this dream are being realized here in Wayne County through
W.A.T.C.H., the Wayne Action Teams for Community Health. W.A.T.C.H. is a non-profit organization that began
in the summer of 1997. Its purpose is to improve the quality of life in Wayne County.
A community needs assessment was completed to determine our needs. Four priorities were identified:
access to care, healthy behaviors, substance abuse and teen pregnancy. Executive Director,
Sissy Lee-Elmore, has secured several grants for W.A.T.C.H. from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust,
Korschun Foundation, The Duke Endowment and the Blue Cross and
Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation. These grants fund several programs related to these priorities.
